In the course, the basic principles of linear continuum mechanics and material modeling are discussed. This is followed by an introduction into the linear finite element method (FEM), with a focus on the application of commercial FEM programs.

  • Tensor representations and algebra
  • Invariants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors
  • Stress and strain tensor
  • Rheological models, elasticity, viscoelasticity
  • Solution algorithm of linear FEM
  • Element types and numerical integration

Requirements for attendance:

  • At least two-semester course in engineering mechanics (statics, elastostatics).
